Minimal Realism

A local Dallas gallery has been holding an exhibition featuring the work of the late great Charley Harper. Realizing that this was a golden opportunity to see some excellent design/illustration work, I made a point to stop in before they take it down.

If your not familiar with Charley Harper's work, he is widely known highly stylized and ridiculously well designed wildlife prints, paintings and illustrations. He was a master at simplification, boiling down his subject matter to there most basic abstract forms. Todd Oldham released Charley Harper: An Illustrated life back in 2007. This book is huge and is filled to the brim with six decades worth of work. If your in the Dallas area this weekend, make sure you stop by The Public Trust soon before it ends.

Speed Sketches

So my buddy Yashar and I have decided to do a thirty minute digital speed painting after work at least once a week. This weeks topic was monsters:

As you can see I have a long way to go with this digital painting stuff. Be sure to check out Yashar's entry. He won this round, since it is a much more finished picture. But I will have the last laugh I swear it! The kid gloves are coming off!
